Those Were The Days My Friend

I remember this quote, just don’t remember where I found it, but it stuck with me: “If you aren’t doing what you love, then you are wasting your time.” Traveling is what I love and each day on the road fills me with happiness. I feel that childlike excitement all over again, and in my book that’s a good thing. It’s something I hope I never lose and I will do everything I can to strengthen it. Every day, no matter how quiet, or how exciting, each day brings wonderment to my spirit. Meeting new people and hearing their stories is what makes me feel part of a community.
We are just five days into our Alaska adventure and I can’t believe what we have experienced in that short time. The incredible beauty and majesty of the Sea to Sky Highway; the uncontainable excitement spotting black bears; the surprise at camping close to a small herd of mountain sheep near the Chasm in BC; climbing the steep roads up the mountains to get to Whistler and having our jaws drop at the massiveness of those mountains; falling asleep to the rushing of a glacial river; waking up to he songs of the forest birds; falling asleep on the lake only to be woken by the cries of the loons nesting nearby and then looking out the window and seeing a sky filled with thousands of stars and that beauty of the stars reflected in the lake. I said it before and I’ll say it a million more times, I am so very grateful for this life we have been given. I’m also grateful that I have a partner who loves this life as much as I do.

This morning while Jim was out fishing I was watching two 8year olds in a squirt gun battle, laughing and running through fields of yellow dandelions. It took me back to my childhood and the water battles my sister, brother and I had and it brought a huge smile to my face. Like the song goes,

“Those were the days my friend
We thought they’d never end
We’d sing and dance forever and a day
We’d live the life we choose
We’d fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way.”

We have enjoyed these three days at Greeny Lake, BC. It’s a forest service park managed by the local volunteer fire department and all proceeds go to the volunteer fire department. Isn’t that a wonderful idea? It’s small, maybe 15-20 sites and a pit toilet. The majority of the sites are along the Lake, all have fire pits and picnic tables. When someone comes around to collect the fee, they ask if  you want to buy firewood and if you answer yes , someone will show up later with a very large supply for 5$.

Jim caught a couple of trout his first day out, so he’s very happy. But the temperatures are rising to the 80s and the fish aren’t biting-smart fish staying cool on the bottom of the Lake.

So we are spending our time kayaking. We bought a Go Pro camera for this trip and I experimented with it while out kayaking. Sophia Coppola has nothing to fear from me and my filmmaking skills, lol. But like they say, practice makes perfect. As soon as I figure out editing I’ll post one, but don’t hold your breath-with internet on the road it’s challenging enough to upload photos !

We’ve been talking to several locals and they shared some spots with us. Come Monday we will be moving onto a new spot, and of course it will have a Lake!

Happy trails and safe travels to all of my road travelers, and if you can’t be on the road keep it in your heart and dreams.

PS This cow moose came out to say good bye as we left Greeny Lake !

Sandy, so good to see you two living your best self. I too am blessed to have a partner that loves to see what’s around the next curve. We are anxious to get on the road to Nova Scotia and New Foundland. We leave July 1 heading up through Thunder Bay and over the top of Superior. We look forward to putting your notes and posts to work. Enjoy. Chris & Mary

I found writing a blog to be a real challenge on our Alaska trip but it’s good to see you are off the a great start. You captured some great photos and told the story well. Looking forward to traveling along…
